Funding Formula Stage 5
What Relationships to build?
A first step is to map out your existing contacts: see more in IPPF’s Donor Mapping Tool. Questions you can ask include:
- Are there formal and informal connections between your organisation and individuals in other agencies, organisations and institutions?
- Do you maintain these relationships? How?
- Which organisations do you partner with?
- Do you below to networks, alliances, coalitions, committees, working groups, etc.?
- Are there other organisations that you should build relationships with? Who are they?
All members of staff at your Member Association can contribute to this. The table below will help you to categorize your contacts: this is a useful exercise as you can see more easily who your key donors and partners are, and what they mean to your Member Association.
Public sector | Private sector | Civil society |
National government / donors | Local businesses, companies, corporations and shops | National Civil Society Organizations |
Ministers | International businesses, companies and corporations | International Civil Society Organizations |
Civil servants | Business associations | Advocacy groups working on sexual and reproductive health and rights issues |
Policy makers and legislators | Professional associations | Media |
Parliamentarians | Celebrities and public figures | Community organizations, such as youth groups and women’s groups |
Local government officials | Influential individuals | Religious and cultural leaders, and faith-based organizations |
Foreign governments, including Consulates, Embassies, High Commissions, Overseas Missions, and Posts; US government agencies such as PEPFAR and CDC | High net worth individuals | Clients, programme beneficiaries, husbands, partners and/or family members |
International donors | Local charitable trusts and foundations | Universities and other academic / research institutions |
Multilateral agencies, including the UN, World Bank, European Commission, African Union, Regional Development Banks | International charitable trusts and foundations | Students, school parents’ associations |
You can use your list of donors and partners to see how your relationships with different stakeholders affect your Resource Mobilization strategy:
- building relationships with the media can increase your Member Association’s visibility
- building relationships with parliamentarians, ministers (and local communities) can increase your Member Association’s relevance
- building relationships with academic institutions, advocacy groups and local groups can increase your Member Association’s credibility
The list will also help you organize your Resource Mobilization activities; for example, you can:
- send your current donors annual reports and other organizational information;
- invite partners to your events;
- use them as a resource for advocacy activities
- identify possible opportunities to contact new, potential donors
